A police team that went to Dholka to uncover gambling was left with a raw deal after a dozen or so people thrashed them for upsetting the party.
During the panchnama, the gamblers allegedly lashed police personnel and tried to burn down a police vehicle.
According to police, the incident happened on Tuesday night at 1:30am.
Following a tip off, a team of five to six police personnel raided the house of one Raju Baldev Patel in Keliya Vasna. Police said at least 30 people were present in the house and were busy gambling in groups. However, the team could get hold of only 11 of them.
When the police began doing the panchnama, Raju allegedly tried to strangulate a constable named Krishnakant. The constable then had to be rushed to the hospital.
Meanwhile, realising that the police presence was poor, the 11 gamblers allegedly started beating up the cops. However, sources said that earlier a brawl had taken place between the injured constable and Raju during the raid.
Sources said that after thrashing the cops the 11 gamblers ran away but on their way found the police jeep. They then reportedly tried to set the jeep on fire with inflammable liquid. The driver of the jeep ran away from the site but informed the control room.
"Soon the local crime branch (LCB) and special operation group (SOG) of Ahmedabad rural police began combing the area. As a result by the evening two people who had escaped were nabbed in connection with the incident," said a source.
According to senior police inspector of Dholka police station, DD Solanki, Ashwin Ramanbhai Patel and Lala Atmaram Thakure have been caught in the case.
He said that the police have got the duo on a three day remand for further investigation.
