Deportation order of Nepalese student Neetu Singh suspended

In the wake of a raging controversy over the action against a Nepal student, the Maharashtra government has suspended the deportation order against Neetu Singh, paving the way for her return to Pune.

Neetu, a student of Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, has been allowed to return to India under a set of conditions that will help her complete her studies, highly placed sources said in Delhi.

The conditions includes a complete ban on talking to media, stay within the campus and bar on approaching any local court. She can go out only with permission from authorities and asked not to engage in anti-national activities, the sources said adding the FTII Director will be held responsible personally for violation of any of these conditions.

Neetu's deportation, allegedly for "anti-India activities" over a month ago had attracted criticism from political parties and women's organisations who demanded that the Centre should intervene and get the deportation revoked.

There were reports that Neetu was deported allegedly under the influence of her estranged husband Amreesh Singh, a Nepal politician who reportedly had some influence with the Central government.

Following the controversy, the home ministry sought a report from the Maharashtra government as the Pune Police apparently had "exceeded" their brief in deportation of Neetu.
