The residents of a building in Shakti Society were in for a shock on Tuesday when the officials of Central Demolition Cell (CDC) of the civic body arrived to demolish the building.

The building, spread on an area of 2,165 sq m, was illegally constructed. Shakti Society is a residential building and 32 families reside in it. CDC, on Tuesday morning, began the process of razing this five-storeyed construction. The demolition is in process and will be completed by Wednesday.

"The open space around Shakti Society building is very less. Also, the gap between the illegal building and the neighbouring buildings is too less. We didn't want to unnecessarily cause any damage to the other buildings in vicinity," said a CDC official.

The official said that because of the narrow gap, they could not use machines and had to demolish the building using manpower, which is why demolition was taking time. While 50% of the work is over, the rest will be done by Wednesday. It may even extend to Thursday, added the official.

The department served the first notice to the building in January 2012 and second in February.

"We didn't receive any response from the building authorities and residents. We then served the third and final notice in February again," said the official from CDC.
