The Delhi Airport will get one of the world’s largest terminals by July that could be ranked along side the new terminals in Beijing and Dubai in terms of size and capability.

With the opening of T3, the new integrated terminal that would handle both domestic and international passengers, the airport will become the sixth-largest in the world.

When operations start at the terminal, the airport will be able to handle 60 million passengers a year and 100 million by 2030.

The new integrated terminal is just three months away from completion, after which extensive trials (Air India will move its operations to the terminal) will be conducted till July, officials said.

The terminal is spacious, modern and brilliantly-lit. Spread across 5.2 lakh square metres, its each pier, to which the 78 boarding bridges have been connected, is 1.2-km long.

More than 22,000 workers have been employed to complete the project on time. “We have been set back by three months because of a problem with the workforce earlier.
Now, we have hired 22,000 workers, instead of the 10,000 earlier, to finish the project on time. We are committed to finishing the passenger area by March 31,” a DIAL (Delhi International Airport Limited) official said, adding, “85% of work has been completed.”

The granite flooring is in place, the ceiling is also complete, except for roof panels, and escalators are in place.

The maximum number of workmen at the terminal at any given time was 37,000 in June and July, 2008. By April next, construction of a few offices and lounges will remain.

“After initial tests, flights will start operating on the new runway. This will also mean maximum utilisation of the runway as it will only take a few minutes from an aircraft to a taxi after landing,” the DIAL official said.

The new terminal will offer barrier-free movement to passengers. “The terminal has been designed keeping in mind these requirements,” a DIAL spokesman, adding, “Special lines will be available for people with special needs. We will also arrange for wheelchairs.”
