The Delhi government's helpline “181” for women in distress seems to be in distress itself as calls from some mobile networks or landline phones (of particular companies) allegedly went unanswered.

It also recorded around 5,000 calls in only 12 hours of being launched but nearly 75% of those were by people who wanted to check whether it is working or not.

The announcement regarding the service was made last week after the brutal gang rape of a young paramedical student in a moving bus in the national capital. The helpline has been set up at the Sheila Dikshit's office in Delhi secretariat.

“The number did start today but there were some glitches. These will be taken care of soon. We received around 5,000 calls since morning but around 75% of them were test calls,” said a government official.

“Depending upon the nature of the complaint, it will either be forwarded to police or other action would be taken,” the government official added.
