Seeking "total intolerance" in dealing with those involved in the trade of counterfeit drugs, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit today said that the city government will strengthen its administrative mechanism to combat the problem effectively.

Addressing a seminar here, Dikshit said the Delhi government will soon prepare an action plan to deal with the menace of spurious drugs and also strengthen the state drug control department after duly examining the recommendations made by Mashelkar Committee.

"I am concerned about the health of people... We will not leave any stone unturned to root out the problem," Dikshit said speaking at a seminar 'Measures to combat counterfeit drugs'.

Expressing concern over proliferation of spurious drugs, Dikshit called for "total intolerance" against those involved in the trade.

"India being the third largest in production of drugs and 13th in terms of value must take serious steps to curb the problem of spurious drugs. It is a global problem," she said.

Recently Union ministry of health and family welfare conducted a nation-wide survey which revealed that 0.046% of the drugs sold were spurious, she said.

The chief minister urged All India Drugs Control Officers Confederation, the organiser of the seminar, to make every effort to check the menace.

She, further, said that Drugs and Cosmetics Act should be enforced effectively to curb the illegal trade and chemists must ensure that their sources of supply were reliable.

Delhi health minister Kiran Walia suggested launching of a toll free number to receive public complaints on spurious drugs.

The conditions for issuing licence for sale of drugs will be also strictly enforced, she said.

"It is also need of the hour to have an adequate testing laboratory to ensure that the suspected samples are tested expeditiously," Walia said.
