A delegation met Governor Dr Kamla recently to submit the report of the public hearing held on January 24 on the migration and social boycott of scheduled caste (SC) and schedule tribe (ST) people in 17 villages across the state.
Human right organisation, Navsarjan Trust, had organised the public hearing. A seven- member delegation met the governor and the leader of the opposition in the state assembly, Shaktisinh Gohil.
Kirit Rathod, programme director of Navsarjan Trust, said: "We met the governor and made the representation about the issues of atrocities on people belonging to SC and ST, along with their sufferings of migration and social boycott in the villages. We requested her to ensure the rehabilitation of the affected people and also demanded that the chief minister call the meeting of state vigilance committee to review the status of SC and ST people in the state." Another member of the delegation, Kantilal Parmar said, "Governor gave us a patient hearing and gave orders to her principal secretary to write a letter to the chief secretary and secretaries of legal, home and social justice departments to submit a report on the status and the action taken on these cases. She has assured us that she will look into the matter."
The delegation also met Gohil and submitted a representation to him. Parmar said, "We met the leader of the opposition and talked about the atrocities faced by the SC and ST people.
We also informed him that as per the state government rules and regulations, the chief minister, who is also the head of the state vigilance committee, should call the meeting twice a year, but it is not happening. We told Gohil that since he is a member of the committee, he can enquire about it.'' Rathod said, "He has given us the assurance that he will take up these issues in the coming session of the state assembly."
