Bhupendra Patel, a contender for the mayor’s post, has been nominated to the AMC’s standing committee.
The way for Asit Vora becoming the next mayor of Ahmedabad seems to have been cleared, unless the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and chief minister Narendra Modi throw some last minute surprises. One of the strongest contenders for the mayor's post — BJP corporator from Thaltej Bhupendra Patel — has been nominated by his party to the AMC's standing committee. Sources in the BJP said that Patel is likely to be made chairman of the committee.
Patel has experience of administration as president of Memnagar nagarpalika. Later, he was vice-chairman of Ahmedabad municipal school board. The BJP has nominated three corporators each from west and north zone, two from new west zone and one each from south and east zone to the standing committee, but the party has nominated no one from the central zone. This lacuna will be filled by the Congress which has nominated Kalupur councillor Surendra Baxi as a member of the standing committee.
Congress corporator from Naroda Road, Mangal Surajkar, will join Baxi in the standing committee. Although the Congress tried very hard to get three seats in the committee, it had to remain content with only two.
The BJP has applied 'no repeat' theory in its nominations to the standing committee. Apart from Vasant Parmar, all the BJP members in the new committee are first time corporators. There is talk in the civic body of the Saffron Party applying the 'no repeat' theory even in appointments to other key posts such as deputy mayor, leader of the party in the AMC and chairman of the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS).
Despite this, senior BJP corporators have no complaints against the party leadership, and they expect to be posted to other key positions and sub-committees.
The BJP is expected to nominate corporators drawn from the central zone, east and the south zones, to three important posts to maintaining balance.
