If you find an unusual queue in front of the BBMP headquarters today, don’t be surprised. Bangalore corporators have now only two days left to declare their assets without risking disqualification from the city hall.

Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act (1976) stipulates that corporators should declare their assets within 30 days of taking the oath of office. The deadline ends on Sunday (May 23). Mayor SK Nataraj said only 35 to 40% of the elected representatives have declared their assets by Friday. “Corporators can declare their assets to me even on Sunday. Me and my deputy have already complied with the rule,” said Nataraj.

Of the 198 corporators, 197 had taken the oath of office on April 23. Section 19 (1) of Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act (1976) says that every councillor shall, not later than one month after the commencement of his term of office and in the same month of each succeeding year, file with the mayor a declaration of all assets owned by him and any member of his family. “Such declaration shall form part of the corporation records,” says former mayor PR Ramesh.

A BBMP official said many declared their assets on Friday.

“The recently held three-day     training camp has created certain awareness about the need for such practices,” said a person familiar with the process.

Ashwath YN, Kempegowda ward corporator, welcomed the process. “I will declare my assets on Saturday. The government, however, should monitor such information throughout the term of our office,” he said.

Lavanya Ganesh Reddy, Lingarajapuram ward corporator, has already done her job. “I just follow the rules,” she said.
