The Srishti Environment Quiz 2011, organised by the city based Darpana Academy, conducted its quarter finals on Friday.
Are you aware of such facts as Polar bears are left-handed or that in a honey bee colony, there is a queen bee, soldier bees and workers bees?
These are just a few facts that make up the children's knowledge bank about the environment. The Srishti Environment Quiz 2011, organised by the city based Darpana Academy, conducted its quarter finals on Friday.
Written tests in 10 different centres across Gujarat were held between February 14 and 19. In all, 32 teams were formed from more than 510 participating students.
The quarter final featuring 32 teams was conducted on Friday and the semi finals and finals will be held on Saturday. The show, which will be aired on television in a series of 16 episodes, will start from May 1.
Samir Pillai and Aditi Paranjape from Shri Narayan Guru Vidyalaya in Ahmedabad said, "It is high time we stopped ignoring the environment and start taking steps for its betterment." Students from Atul Vidyalaya, Valsad said, "The chalta hai" attitude should not be accepted anymore.
Shivam Bhatt from Rajkot was not satisfied with his preparations as according to him, "the more you read or learn, the less prepared you are, it seems. There is so much to know about the environment that quizzes such as this help and motivate us to take interest in the subject."
Mallika Sarabhai said, "Environment is not a subject, it is a life. The participants are from Gujarat and it is the only quiz that is held in Gujarati. I want to infuse fun in the entire process. They need to know about their surroundings. We will be distributing prizes among the winners. These will include hiking bags and folders made of eco-friendly materials, among others."
