Governor Dr Kamla unfurled the national flag at the state-level celebrations of the 63rd Republic Day in Bhavnagar on Thursday. A march past and a host of cultural programmes were also organised to mark the occasion.
The Governor unfurled the tricolour at 9 am in the presence of chief minister Narendra Modi, MPs, MLAs and senior government officials. The Governor also inspected the parade.
The march past had 22 platoons, including SRP personnel, police force, women police, traffic police, coast guard and NCC jawans. In all, more than 650 jawans took part in the march past.This was followed by a daredevil motorcycle stunt show and march past of the Men in Black - the Chetak commandos - which drew applause from everyone. Around 2,500 students of Bhavnagar's government schools performed Surya Namaskar and other yogasanas.
Later, members of police families presented folksongs and raas garba with the fusion of western music. A dog-show and horse-show were also organised, which was followed by procession of tableaux of different government departments. The Chetak commando force won the first prize in march past, the police band the second, and the Raksha Shakti University platoon the third prize.
Among tableaux, the Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojna tableau of tribal development department won the first prize, while the tableau of youth and cultural activities department won the second prize. The tableau of cottage industries department bagged the third prize.
