The CPI today said the country would have welcomed the situation had prime minister Manmohan Singh accepted the resignation of Union home minister P Chidambaram in the aftermath of the Dantewada massacre.

"The people of the country would have heaved a sigh of relief if Chidamabram's resignation owning moral responsibility for the massacre by Maoists killing 75 CRPF personnel had been accepted by the PM," CPI national secretary, Atul Kumar Anjaan told reporters in Patna.

"It would have been a good riddance as the home minister advocates the causes of the privileged section of the society at the cost of the poor people," he said.

Charging that the UPA government did not know how to handle challenges, he said it was like a "a hospital without medicines and a kitchen without firewood."
