Chandrakant Konkani of Rambas village came across this variety of bees that does not sting and also produce better honey.
Dream of all apiarists? More honey, sweet returns and friendly bees! Well, it seems at least apiarists can thank this bee farmer in the Dangs for answering their prayers. Chandrakant Konkani from Rambhas village of Dangs has discovered a new variety of honeybees which don't sting and also produce more honey!
Science does not always require sophisticated infrastructure or facilities and this is exactly what has been proved by this diploma holder from the Navsari Agricultural University. Konkani has been engaged in apiculture (bee keeping) for the past 10 years and has achieved record-breaking success in the production of honey in the entire South Gujarat region.
The bees that this pioneering apiarist has discovered are the Rajuni Kote and Zemon Kote honeybees. Explaining more about this, Konkani said: "Both species are found in Dangs, but they used to sting people. While working at my apiary, I came across a new type of honeybee that did not have stings. Interestingly, they belong to the same family but are different."
Hence, the non-stinging honeybees do not belong to a different species than the stinging ones, and are hence not given different names. However, they produce honey of markedly better quality.
Konkani has sent samples of honey collected from the new honeybee variety to the Veer Narmad South Gujarat University and the state Horticulture Department for testing. Both institutions have lauded him for his exceptional work and the Horticulture Department has felicitated him through an NGO.
At present, Konkani is busy showcasing his discovery to other apiarists in Dangs and surrounding areas. He also guides farmers in India and abroad regarding honey-cultivation methods.
Additionally, Konkani has conducted research which has helped increase productivity by 40% in the farming of mango and cashew nut crops with the help of honeybees.
