Stepping up efforts to provide succour to the cyclone Thane hit people, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday said all those affected by the storm fury in Cuddalore and Villupuram districts would be provided relief amount in another two days ahead of harvest festival Pongal.
Making the announcement after reviewing the relief works at a meeting of top officials chaired by her at the Secretariat, Jayalalithaa said nearly 1,53,000 people in Cuddalore and 23,776 people in Villpuram who lost their houses in the December 30 cyclone fury were yet to get the relief amount.
On January 3, Jayalalithaa had announced a relief of Rs2,500 each to those whose huts were partly damaged and Rs5,000 for fully damaged huts and tiled houses and earmarked Rs114 crore for this. She had then pegged the number of total damaged huts and houses at 3.5 lakh.
An official release today said the Chief Minister ordered placing of five water tankers in each panchayat union to provide drinking water supplies besides other measures to meet water requirements in these two districts.
While 18,000 electric poles have been sent to these districts, efforts were on to bring additional 12,000 poles from Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and other states and deploy additional 5,000 people to restore power supply before the Pongal festival, she said.
The severe cyclonic storm that crossed the state coast on December 30 left a trail of destruction claiming 39 lives in Cuddalore district, the worst hit, and leaving thousands of people in relief camps.
