Cyber fraud steals Rs7 lakh by hacking bank password

The account holder was on vacation and when he returned, he got the shock of his life after his account showed a zero balance.

In yet another cyber crime incident, a bank account holder was duped of his hard earned Rs7 lakh after someone misused the internet-banking password and transferred the amount to seven different accounts in various banks. 

The account holder was on vacation and when he returned, he got the shock of his life after his account showed a zero balance. Shyamsunder Sharma, a resident of Aakash Towers near the chief justice bungalow in Bodakdev, Vastrapur has filed a complaint with the Naranpura police station after someone illegally  transferred Rs7 lakhs from his account between October 21 and October 22.

"Sharma had a bank account with the Industrial Branch of Union Bank of India with a balance of Rs7 lakh which was transferred to different accounts of various banks in the city," said police inspector of Naranpura Police Station, RK Khumbarvadiya.

He said that the police is investigating the internet protocol address through which the money was transferred. He said they are also investigating the account holders of the accounts to which the money was transferred.

"This is a case of cyber crime and we are tying to get  its details," he said. Khumbarvadiya said that the complainant has not named any suspects. A senior official of the Union Bank of India who did not wish to be named said that the bank has a secure system for internet banking.

"Primary investigation by the bank has revealed that the password of the customer was misused by someone. The bank has so far freezed two accounts in this connection," the official said. "We have identified some other bank accounts and will freeze them soon," the bank official said. He said that the bank is also carrying out is own investigation.
