The apex vigilance institution, Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has sought permission to initiate major penalty proceedings against 113 government officials involved in corruption cases. The government’s sanction is required to prosecute any employee right from the level of the peon to the prime minister while officials of the joint secretary rank and above enjoy immunity from even registration of any case against them without government’s sanction.
The officials in the CVC list include a general manager of Corporation Bank, one director in the department of Mines, one Chief Commissioner of Central Board of Excise & Customs and one executive director (ED) of Steel Authority of India Ltd. It has also asked the government to issue sanction for prosecution against 16 other officials.
A press release issued by the CVC said the Chief Technical Examiners Organisation of the Commission has submitted 7 technical examination reports, resulting in the recovery of Rs14.82 crore. Total recoveries during the year 2011 work out to Rs88.90 crore, the release added.
Facing flak in the Supreme Court last week, the department of personnel and training has also woken up from the slumber directing ministries to clear prosecution requests by the CVC or the CBI at earliest. The CBI list includes 15 high-ranking officials of the rank of the joint secretary found guilty of graft.
