With a view to change the perception of people on birth of a girl child, a Sanand-based NGO, Manav Sewa Trust and the district panchayat have joined hands to distribute crackers and celebrate the birth of a girl.

The programme will be inaugurated on May 11. Officials and volunteers of the NGO will travel to the village where a girl child was born recently and will burst crackers to celebrate.

The programme has been planned for one year for villages of Sanand taluka. Later, it will be extended to the whole of Ahmedabad  district.

The NGO will distribute crackers through accredited social health activist or ASHA worker, a woman appointed in the village to take care of health.

The chief district health officer (DHO), Dr MJ Patel said, "We want villagers to celebrate the birth of a girl like a festival. There is lack of awareness in rural areas about girl child and parents hesitate to share the news with their friends and relatives.

This is an effort to change prevalent attitudes and create a friendly environment for the girl child in villages." chairman of Manav Sewa, Manubhai Barot said,

"Till recently, the slogan in Gujarat was 'Beti bachao' (save the girl child). Now we are moving a step further with a campaign called 'Beti vadhao' (welcome the girl child).”
