Supporting a joint operation against Maoists, CPI(Maoist) today said the ultras should also be defeated politically in order to demolish their support base among the tribal population.
"Maoists work on specific political agenda. They should be isolated politically in order to foil their evil designs of creating liberated zones in tribal-dominated areas of Orissa, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and other states," CPI(M) Orissa state secretary Janardan Pati told reporters.
Pati said Maoist-hit state governments should consider CPI(M) as a political outfit instead of treating it as a "terrorist" oganisation though they indulge in violence.
Stating that about 80 CPI(M) party cadre had been killed by Maoists in eastern states, Pati claimed CPI(M) was the lone party which had been opposing Maoists politically.
"Opposition on the political front had hit Maoists hard," Pati said, adding that only anti-Maoist operations would not help in ending the mayhem.
Optimistic of Maoists defeat, the CPI(M) leader said: "Maoists should realise that it was impossible to achieve their goals through guns in a vibrant democracy."
Alleging that Orissa government lacked "will" to fight Maoists, Pati said the police was not mentally tough to face the challenges posed by ultras.
"The police is terribly afraid of Maoists in Orissa," he said.
Though chief minister Naveen Patnaik had been asking Maoists to shun weapons, he had not pleaded against innocent killing by Maoists, Pati said.
On the chief ministers conference on joint operation to curb Left Wing Extremism, Pati said: "Only operation will not help. The jawans may kill 50/60 ultras during operation. But this did not mean Maoists are gone. Unless there is a fight in political level, Maoists will again rear their heads."
