The national political situation afflicted by telecom and other scandals as well as the disruptions in Parliament today came up for debate at a meeting of top CPI(M) leaders here.

Reports on the ground situation in West Bengal and Kerala, the two strongholds of the party which are going to polls next year, are also understood to have been discussed at the three-day meeting of the central committee, which began here today.

A draft report on the overall situation in Jammu and Kashmir was also tabled at the meeting by the party's state secretary Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami. It is likely to be taken up for a discussion tomorrow.

This is for the first time after several years that the situation in Kashmir valley, including the recent 8-point formula of the Centre, would be discussed by the major Left party, which has been saying that only a political committee of interlocutors can seriously conduct exercise of initiating dialogue with all sections of the people in the state.

It has also been seeking a change in the overall security strategy and the manner in which civil protests were tackled in the valley.

Besides demanding release of all young people arrested for taking part in the protests and against whom there are no serious charges, the CPI(M) has also sought rehabilitation package for the Kashmiri Pandits who have been displaced for over a decade now.

The implications of the political situation marked by the scams in 2G spectrum allocation, Commonwealth Games, illegal mining and Adarsh housing, was also discussed at the meeting today, they said, adding that the fact that the UPA-II government was under "serious pressure" on many of these issues was also noted.

The price and unemployment situation and the growing military and strategic links between India and the US would also be discussed by the 87-member Committee, the sources said.
