Congress leader Ommen Chandy today asked the LDF government in Kerala to come out with concrete evidence to substantiate its charges that the previous UDF government had tried to "scuttle" probe into the assassination attempt on former CPI-M chief minister EK Nayanar.

Describing the charges as baseless, Chandy said the LDF should come out with facts to prove that the previous UDF government had tried to scuttle or withdraw the cases relating to the probe into the 1999 assassination attempt on Nayanar.

His statement comes in the wake of reported remarks by home minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and CPI-M leader Pinarayi Vijayan recently that the previous UDF government led by Chandy had tried to scuttle the probe into the case.

Accusing the Left Front government of showing "laxity" by delaying the probe, Chandy alleged the inquiry was revived only after the arrest of suspected LeT operative T Nazir, who is said to have plotted the murder attempt on the CPI-M veteran.

The CPI-M should clarify the steps initiated by LDF government during the last three-and-a-half years to speed up the inquiry into the case, Chandy said.

"CPI-M leaders are now trying to cover up their failure by not ordering re-examination of facts concerning the stalled probe and instead trying to pass the buck on the previous UDF government in connection with the case," he said.

"The LDF government should come to come out with facts to prove that my government had tried to scuttle or withdraw the cases relating to the probe into the assassination bid on the former CPI-M chief minister as it is a very serious charge, Chandy said.

Terming as "unfortunate" the reported remarks by PDP leader Abdul Naser Madhani accusing KPCC President Ramesh Chennithala of adopting soft stand towards RSS, he said Chenithala does not require Madhani's "certificate" to prove secular credentials.
