Guwahati:

The Assam unit of the CPI today demanded updating of the National Registrar of Citizen (NRC) before the state assembly elections in 2011.

Addressing a press conference here, CPI's politburo member Promod Gogoi said the NRC has to be updated before the assembly election as "names of lakhs of infiltrators are in the voters list".

"The need of the hour is to update the NRC before the assembly poll so that names of only genuine Indian citizens are present in the voters list," he added.

Voicing concern at the "unprecedented" price rise of essential commodities in the state, the CPI leader said his party will stage a demonstration next month.

"We will stage dharnas in the middle of next month to protest against the price rise of essential commodities which has hit hard the common people," he said.
