A Delhi court has dismissed a bail plea by one of the accused in the case relating to to the murder of bandit-turned-politician Phoolan Devi in 2001.

Additional sessions judge SC Rajan declined to grant the plea of Vijay Singh Rana, brother of the main accused Sher Singh Rana, who wanted to be freed to attend to his ailing mother.

"It is an admitted fact that the mother of the accused is suffering from gynaecological problem and it is also admitted that the accused is unmarried. It seems that he would not be able to understand his mother's problem and he is not familiar with this (the problem)," the court said.

It also noted that the accused had another brother who can look after the mother.

Vijay had sought bail on the ground that he has to take care of his mother, who was ill, and he had to arrange money for her operation on March 27.

The trial court is at present recording statement of prosecution witnesses in the murder case of the Samajwadi Party MP.

Sher Singh Rana, with 11 others, allegedly killed Phoolan on July 25, 2001, to avenge the 1981 Behmai massacre in which she had killed 17 people of upper caste Thakur group. The assailants dropped weapons at the murder spot after killing her outside her 44 Ashoka Road residence here.
