This trend came to light two days ago, when a liquor consignment was seized from a courier company vehicle. Police said, recently an ambulance was also used for smuggling liquor into the state.
According to officials, the Vapi town police seized a liquor consignment which was being carried in a courier company vehicle on Tuesday. The Mahindra Pick-Up (DD-03-F-9836), belonging to Blue Dart Express, was transporting liquor from Daman, and was to deliver the consignment at Ahmedabad, police said. The liquor consignment, comprising 586 bottles and worth Rs32,080, was found wrapped in a cloth bundle.
“Normally, we let such vehicles pass without suspicion, but we stopped and checked this particular vehicle on account of specific information that liquor was being smuggled in it,” said a Vapi town police official.
The police arrested two persons, identified as Zamil Khan Mohammed of Daman, and Rajesh Rana of Bhakti nagar, Surat, along with the consignment. The vehicle was also seized along with the liquor consignment.
The police ruled out involvement of the courier company or any of its officials in the bootlegging racket, saying it was the handiwork of the duo. While, the police were successful in catching the liquor consignment in this instance, officials said use of unconventional vehicles for liquor smuggling by the bootleggers is on the rise.
"Just last week, we seized a liquor consignment from an ambulance, while two days back seizure was made from a courier company vehicle. Bootleggers have now started resorting to different modes of transport to smuggle liquor," said Valsad DSP, DJ Patel.
