Policemen created a storm by parading naked a couple before the media in an Assam town.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening at the boy’s rented house in Morigaon, around 140 km east of Guwahati. The police action followed after the couple, in their early twenties, was found in a compromising position. Reports suggest the duo was having an affair.
The policemen, five of them, were tipped off by some locals. After having managed to enter the house, possibly through an unlocked door, the cops called in some mediapersons. They then allegedly forced the duo to stay naked for close to twenty minutes to facilitate video-shooting and photography.
The police ordered an inquiry into the incident but denied allegations the duo was forced to stay naked.
“Two sepoys had gone to the house but they didn’t order the duo to stay naked. The boy and the girl (a college student) got enough time to get garbed before the arrival of the mediapersons,” district police chief Jeetmol Doley told DNA.
“The sepoys didn’t have any criminal intentions. The girl said she didn’t have any grievance. However, we are trying to find out if there was any negligence. A DSP is probing the case and action will be taken against the personnel if found guilty,” Doley said. He added that they were also trying to find out as to who had called in the journalists insisting that it was not done by the cops.
Human right activists were quick to condemn the police action.
