NEW DELHI: Call it the sheer ingenuity of conmen in this age of Bluetooth, but these scamsters managed to sell an ordinary metal in the garb of "Nagmani", a mythological gem embedded on the hood of a snake with the power to fulfill all wishes, to two Delhi-based businessmen at a whooping Rs 1.5 crore each. The cloak on the gang's brilliant con job was lifted with the arrest of two of its members by the Delhi police last week on the complaint of one of the victims.

The Delhi police (West district) arrested Parminder Singh and his associate Jitendra, both residents of Patel Nagar in west Delhi on charges of cheating Harbans Lal, a property dealer from Prashant Vihar of Rs 1.5 crores. They had promised to procure him the coveted gem which had extraordinary functions.

The interrogation of the accused has unraveled an intricate network of a gang from all corners of the country which operated with meticulous planning.

As the modus operandi of the gang was splashed across the media on Friday, another businessman came forward to lodge a complaint against the same gang. Satish Sherawat, 32, a transporter from Vasant Vihar in south west Delhi alleged that he too had been defrauded of Rs 1.5 crore in a similar fashion. And some of the names of the gang members are common. The Delhi police has launched an investigation in to the fraud and is on the hunt for other members.

"Both the cases seem to be the handiwork of one gang and we are investigating jointly with the west district," said R S Yadav, DCP (South-West).

"To my utter disbelief, as the gem was kept beside a rice grain, the grain burst into flames. When a pencil torch was focused on the gem, its front glass broke into pieces and when opened its battery too appeared to have been scorched. Amazed at the powers of the gem I agreed to buy it," said one victim.
