Dissatisfied with the reply of the BJP government about framing a separate policy for cleaning silt in the hydroelectric projects, Congress members today staged a walkout in the Uttarakhand Assembly.
The issue was raised by Kedar Singh Rawat of Congress, who sought to know as to how much money was spent on cleaning silt from Maneri Bhali-II project.
In reply, parliamentary affairs minister Prakash Pant said Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam (UJVNL), a state government enterprise, spent Rs9.33 crore for cleaning silt of Maneri
Bhali-II as heavy rains in catchment area filled silt in the river water in the first year of its commissioning in 2008.
The UJVNL also received a royalty of Rs2.71 crore after selling sand, he added.
Pant, however, said during the cleaning process most of the sand washed away back into the river.
On this, Rawat asked the government whether it intends to frame a separate policy for cleaning silt from the hydel projects as it usually hampers their operation. When the government replied in negative, the Congress members staged a walkout alleging that the government was not serious over the issue.
