Congress today sought to downplay the decision of the government to end the austerity drive even as the party continued with it.

"There is a need to make a distinction between how government conducts itself and how a party should be conducting itself ... A political party also benchmarks and leads by example," party spokesperson Manish Tewari said when asked why the party should continue with the drive when the government has ended it.

Tewari said, "there is possibly a need to internalize austerity in our conduct. That is an example which the Congress president has been trying to set and that will continue. What the government decided to do or not to do is a question which the government will be best to address".
