To counter factionism within the party, the Congress high command is banking on Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) chief Chiranjeevi to make things easier in Andhra Pradesh.

PRP has 18 MLAs in the Andhra assembly. The state assembly has 294 seats and a party requires 148 MLAs to form the government. The Congress is the single largest party with 156 MLAs, but is keeping Chiranjeevi’s support as a fall back option since there is a speculation over a possible revolt by some MLAs favouring YS Jagan Mohan Reddy for the CM’s post.

“Chiranjeevi will come in with his MLAs to support the party if there is an attempt to arm twist the high command. It is possible that some of those siding with Jagan will threaten resignations,” a Congress leader said.

Chiranjeevi reportedly met several Congress leaders in Delhi to assure his party’s support for the Congress.
