With the Telangana issue becoming a major problem for it, Congress on Tuesday sought to puncture Mayawati's plans to divide Uttar Pradesh by pitching for a second States Re-organisation Commission in the party's manifesto for the state.
"For better administration and for effective implementation machinery, small sized states may be desirable but creating a new state or states out of existing states always leads to complex issues which require to be deliberated dispassionately by an Expert body like a States Re-organisation Commission.
"Therefore, if Congress comes to power in UP, it will ask the Centre to appoint a second States Reorganisation Commission to look into and address the issues appropriately", the party said in its Manifesto for the UP Assenbly polls released at 10 places in the state today.
Ahead of the Assembly polls in November, Chief Minister Mayawati had taken the opposition by surprise by proposing division of UP into four states — Awadh Pradesh, Poorvanchal, Budelkhand and Paschim Pradesh.
The move was dubbed as a political gimmick. The ruling BSP pushed through the resolution in the state Assembly amid stiff resistance from the opposition benches and sent it to the Centre for approval.
The Centre had later sent back UP's proposal and sought reply on eight to nine questions pertaining to the matter like the boundaries, new capitals etc and also about the spiralling debt burden of the country's most populous state.
The issue of carving out a separate Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh has become a major problem for the Congress and the Centre for the past more than a year with parties divided on regional lines over it in the southern state.
