Janata Dal (United) on Thursday accused Congress of making a "sinister bid" to lure OBCs by promising reservation for backward classes in its election manifesto for Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
"The Congress' electoral promise in its election manifesto is nothing but to lure OBCs," JD(U) national spokesperson Shivanand Tiwari told reporters in Patna.
Congress, he said, had never made the promise for giving OBC reservation from the period when Jawaharlal Nehru to PV Narsimha Rao headed its governments.
"It is an election manifesto to cheat and befool backwards," Tiwari said and recalled that Congress had disapproved Kalekar Committee recommendation for provisions of reservation for OBCs in 1953.
Congress had even dismissed the recommendations of Mandal Commission, he said, accusing the party of trying to create a wedge between backwards and minorities' sections by reducing the quota of reservation of 27% for OBCs by 4.5% for minorities.
