New Delhi: The Congress leadership is in a quandary over the Liberhan commission report. It is under pressure from the secular lobby to immediately make the report public but it concerned about the political fallout.
Making the report public may provide the Bharatiya Janata Party with an opportunity to revive the Ram Mandir issue. There is also the fear that adverse references to the Congress government headed by PV Narasimha Rao in 1992 could singe the party and give its competitors for the secular vote like Lalu Prasad and the Left a stick to beat it with.
The government has sought to buy time by deciding not to table the report during the current session of Parliament. The government can take up to six months to table it. According to senior government functionaries, while the report has held some senior BJP functionaries guilty, its findings could also adversely impact the ruling party. Sources said Justice Liberhan was ready with his report in February but the government, unsure of its political impact on the general polls, gave him an extension.
