Committee criticises hygiene situation in Ahmedabad Civil Hospital

The 11-member committee appointed to look into the matter of filth at the Civil Hospital has made some damning observations about the hygiene situation at the hospital. The committee was constituted following the high court’s intervention in connection with a PIL regarding the same and had submitted its report recently.

On Thursday, a division bench of acting chief justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and justice JB Pardiwala, sought suggestions from all parties concerned on the same and posted the matter for further hearing next Wednesday.

It should be noted that the committee made a slew of observations regarding the functioning of the Civil Hospital. It noted that the hospital lacked proper management and administration and nothing was being done to minimise the public health hazard it posed. It further stated that the campus lacked facilities and skills for maintenance.

The committee has also advised upgrading the hospital’s facilities including mosquito control programme before the 2012 monsoon.

The committee blasted the hospital for lack of adequate solid waste disposal system. It has also recommended restricted entry into the hospital and the need for a public health unit.

It also observed that the gutters were blocked while there was no system in place for discharge of water collected on the roof of the hospital during rains.

The PIL was filed by Ila Pathak after students of the BJ Medical College in the Civil Hospital campus went on strike to protest the unhygienic conditions on campus.
