The general stream result of HSC is out and the race for admissions to commerce colleges in the city has begun. Unlike science stream students, general stream students do not seem much excited about their future plans.

The reason they say is that a graduate degree in commerce and arts alone will not land them a rewarding job with the private sector.

So these students are now eyeing government jobs after graduation.

"Instead of wasting three years in college, I will utilise that time and prepare for competitive exams which will at least land me a job in railways or bank," said Aalekh Shah, who scored grade A in class XII commerce.

Just like him, many other students, who are not interested in doing CA or CS, are eying government jobs after graduation. The students opined that there are two benefits of having a government job, one is security another being the high pay scale.

"I know few of my friends who are getting more than Rs30,000 per month. They are either clerks or junior officers in some government department," said Junaid, who has already bought a book to study for exams to clear the grade 2 level jobs with the state government.

This new attraction towards government jobs can be attributed to the implementation of sixth pay commission pay scales and recent job losses in private sector due to global recession.

"Even if I become a junior officer in railways, my salary and job security will be better than that of my father who is a manager in a company," said Lokesh Thanki. Thanki is planning to appear for competitive exams of railways or banks after graduation.

"Even after the graduation, we are left with choices like M.Com or MA, which also serve no purpose. Even a degree in MBA has become too common and less rewarding," said Dharmesh Acharya, who wants to utilize his three years in preparing exams to land a government jobs.

"Instead of spending three years in college canteens, we can shape our future by preparing to clear exams that will give as a government job," said Bipin Rathod, who plans to appear for bank PO exams after graduation.
