NANDIGRAM: Five policemen were injured, two of them severely, in clashes between members of the CPI(M) and Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (Farmland Eviction Resistance Committee) at Nandigram, the proposed site for Salim Group’s SEZ project in East Midnapore district on Wednesday.
The clashes took place after two local CPI(M) activists, Uttam and Ashok Bera, were beaten up by the committee members, leading to a clash between the two groups. Handmade bombs and firearms were openly used in the clash. The police had to resort to lathicharge and fire bullets in the air to disperse the mob. Bombs were even hurled towards the police injuring five police personnel, including an additional SP and a deputy SP.
The East Midnapore SP Anil Srinivasan said that police suspect the involvement of Maoists in the attack. “We are investigating the matter,” Srinivasan said.
However, TMC MLA Subhendu Adhikari said: “The committee has many groups who are against the land acquisition. There is no question of Maoist involvement.”
