Civilian killed by Village Defence Committee member in Rajouri

A civilian was allegedly shot dead by a Village Defence Committee (VDC) member over an old enmity in Rajouri district in Jammu division, police said in Jammu today.

The incident took place when Abdul Shafiq and VDC member Satpaul had a heated argument over some issue at Daraj Mohra village in Rajouri district yesterday, they said.

Satpaul later took out his official gun and shot at Shafiq, killing him on the spot.

Later the villagers caught hold of Satpaul and severely beat him and tied him with a tree.

The police then reached to the spot and arrested the accused.

Enraged over the incident, some villagers blocked the Rajouri-Budhal road.

Senior police officers rushed to the spot and assured them of action against the accused following which the locals dispersed and the traffic was restored on the road.

Meanwhile, two persons, including a minor girl, allegedly committed suicide in two separate incidents in Kathua and Rajouri districts of Jammu and Kashmir, police said here today.

Tara Chand, 67, committed suicide by shooting himself with a .12 bore gun at his residence in remote area of Bani in Kathua district yesterday, they said.

In another incident, a 15-year-old girl Jagmeet Kour committed suicide by hanging herself with a ceiling fan at her residence in Nowshera area of Rajouri district last evening, they said.

The girl was alone at her house when she took the extreme step.
