Concerned over the presence of Chinese military personnel in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, India on Wednesday said it had conveyed its objections to Beijing in this regard.

“We are aware of their presence there. We have conveyed our concern to China in this regard. But, at the same time we are strengthening our capabilities in the eastern sector,” defence minister AK Antony said speaking on the sidelines of the Naval Commanders Conference in New Delhi.

He was answering questions regarding the presence of some combat engineers among the 3,000 odd Chinese in PoK.

On Chinese objection to Indian presence in South China sea near Vietnam, he said India’s interest lies only in uninterrupted passage of ships and trade in the area. “There is no question of Indian navy going there,” Antony said.

Dubbing the recent incidents of “unnoticed” cargo vessels entering into Indian territory as “isolated”, Antony said though they directly did not pose a challenge, they highlighted the need to further strengthen our coastlines and maritime security.

Regarding the much-delayed aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov, he said it will be inducted in Navy by the end of next year.

Antony spoke on other issues and challenges that face the Indian Navy as well. Describing piracy as a cause of major concern, he acknowledged the proactive efforts of the Indian Navy and noted that, “the international community as a whole needs to do a lot more collectively”.
