After Sabarmati saw two mega events - Patangotsav and celebration of Amdavad’s 600th birthday - being hosted on its riverfront, it will now get ready to host another grand celebration — the birthday of Lord Jhulelal or Chetichand Sindhi Day on March 17. This year the Chetichand Sindhi Day Committee, Ahmedabad (CSCDA) has decided to include comedian Raju Shrivastav’s shows besides songs and other entertainment activities to celebrate the occasion.
Talking to the media on Sunday, Lachhmandas Rohra, convener of CSCDA said, “Lord Jhulelal is believed to be the descendant of water and light. He was born on the second day of Chaitra month of Indian calender in 1007 in the Sindh region, which is now in Pakistan. The Sindhi community, across the world, celebrates the Lord’s birthday as ‘Chetichand’ and ‘Sindhi Day’. We are celebrating this festival by organising a procession from Panch Kuva gate on the March 17 where 70-80 tableaux, 10-15 band parties on tempos and a special devotional dance by Sindhi men, called the ‘Chhej’ will be part of the procession. It will be flagged off by the head of the Jagannath Temple, Rameshwardas and Dr Mayaben Kodnani, member of legislative assembly from Naroda constituency, who will also accompany the procession.”
Maya Kodnani, who was also present in the meeting said, “This year it will be like a Triveni Sangam in Ahmedabad as the Sindhi community, which hails from the banks of river Sindhu will celebrate ‘Chetichand’ on the banks of Sabarmati, where water of river Narmada flows. In past Sindh had saved India and its culture like a shield at the time of attacks by invaders like Alexander,” she said.
