Demanding greater autonomy for institutions like IITs and IIMs, chairman board of governors IIM-A Dr Vijaypat Singhania today urged the government to free such institutions from all operational controls.

"The government should use institutions like IITs and IIMs wisely by freeing them from all operational controls while asking them to shoulder responsibility to provide benchmarks for quality education needed by society," Singhania said while delivering his inaugural speech at the 45th convocation ceremony of IIM-A held today.

In 1998 when India was at position 128 out of 174 nations in the field of Human Development, 11 years later its position has slipped to 134 out of 182 nations. We need some serious introspection, especially since Brazil and China retained
their positions, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, director IIM-A Dr Samir Barua said, the need for full autonomy to decide its (IIM) destiny is urgent, Barua said.

"If the autonomy is withheld, future generations will hold us responsible for sowing the seeds of demise of some of the excellent public institutions of higher learning we have build in the country today," he said.

"IIM-A is attempting to expand its global footprint through offering executive education programmes outside India," Barua said. More

"It is time for the government and the larger society to set such institutions free from all controls so that it can compete without its hands being tied against the foreign B-schools that are being allowed entry into India," Dr Barua said.

IIM-A has become the first B-school globally that educated 23 students absolutely free, Barua said adding "In 2009-10, another 18 students were educated at no cost by the institute and we are planning to continue this initiative next year too."

Seventeen students received the title Fellow of IIM-A after completing the doctoral programme of the institute Fellow Programme in Management which is the largest batch so far at IIM-A, while 19 students received PG diploma in Agri Business Management(PGP-ABM).

IIM-A has received proposals from foreign academic institutions for cross-border collaboration with their doctoral programmes, Barua said.

While, 283 students received diploma, students who bagged the gold medal for scholastic performance were Samrat Ashok Lal, Rohan Chuadhary and Himanshu Sharma.
