The palace city of Mysore attracts hordes of foreigners in the city every single month. And of these 150 foreigners visit Mysore to acquire training in Ashtanga yoga (a school of yoga that dates back thousands of years ago).

This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures—a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs.

The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind. And recently, the New York Times mentioned this yoga centre as one of the must-visits in the year 2010.
The Ashtanga Yoga Centre was formed by KP Jois and now they have schools all over the world.

S Jois who manages the Centre now says, “We have our centres abroad as well and we have taught the likes of international singer Madonna, Sting, actor Gwyeneth Paltrow and others.” He adds, “We have a month- long intensive training that we conduct here in Mysore and we get students from countries like USA, UK, Finland, Sweden, Argentina, Japan and others who come here to spend a month dedicated to yoga and also learning Sanskrit chanting.” The fees for this one-month course are Rs 27,575 which just includes the classes and no accommodation or food. And a month after, the fees is Rs 17,000 for the next 30 days.

But, Indians will get a much better deal. “To promote yoga among Indians we have subsidized rates just of Rs 5000. We believe that it is important that people of our country understand the essence of yoga and pass on this rich tradition to the next generations,” confirms S Jois. If you wish to undergo this course, make sure you call in advance as they have a long waiting list.

Ashtanga yoga is a system of yoga recorded by the sage Vamana Rishi in the Yoga Korunta, an ancient manuscript which is said to contain lists of many different groupings of asanas, as well as highly original teachings on vinyasa, drishti, bandhas, mudras, and philosophy.

The text of the Yoga Korunta was imparted to T Krishnamacharya in the early 1900’s by his Guru Rama Mohan Brahmachari, and was later passed down to Pattabhi Jois during the duration of his studies with Krishnamacharya, beginning in 1927.
