A special MCOCA court on Friday granted permission to the CBI to reinvestigate the Malegaon blast case of 2006 in which 37 people were killed and more then 100 injured. They can now seek further evidence.

The agency had made an application before a MCOCA court for the investigation following the revelations in the confessional statement of Swami Aseemanand, who blamed Hindu groups for the act.

Aseemanand had said that RSS’s murdered worker Sunil Joshi and others were responsible for Malegaon 2006 blasts.

The Maharashtra anti-terrorism squad (ATS), which had earlier investigated the case, arrested nine people in the case.

The ATS claimed that four bombs were planted in Malegaon, a communally sensitive area, on the occasion of the holy festival of Shab-e-Barat when people had gathered in thousands to pay respect to their dead kin.

The ATS had claimed that the blast was conducted by the accused, mainly associated with banned Student Islamic Moment of India (SIMI), in order to create a rift between two communities.

Under pressure from the Muslim community, the then state government handed the case over to the CBI for investigation. However, on the day when the CBI was asked to take over the case, ATS filed a charge sheet against the accused.

The new twist came when Aseemanand told a Delhi metropolitan court last month that the blast was the handiwork of a few RSS pracharaks including one Sunil Joshi. The confession statement adds that Malegaon was chosen for the blast as it has a majority population of Muslims — over 80%

Terror stuck Malegaon a second time in 2008 in which the members of a right-wing group, Abhinav Bharat, including Sadhvi Pragya and former Lt Col Srikant Purohit, were arrested along with few others.
