Kapoor is said to have accumulated assets disproportionate to his income
NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has swooped down on a serving major general, Anand Kumar Kapoor, who is believed to be in the race for becoming the director general of ordnance corp.
Though the army denied receiving any complaint against the high-ranking officer, the CBI said that it recently received a complaint and a case was registered against him on charges of accumulating assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
After conducting initial investigations, a case was registered on Thursday. Sources in the army informed that Kapoor has been asked to report at the CBI headquarters on Thursday morning along with the documents related to his assets, bank accounts, lockers, fixed deposits and cash recovered from his residence.
Army sources also suspect that the recent raids could be because of the race to become the director general of ordnance corp, which is considered to be a prized posting.
The CBI team has seized documents related to twelve properties in Delhi, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Shimla and Mumbai. Apart from the houses, sleuths also found fixed deposits worth Rs. 1.3 crores, 4 lockers full of jewellery, Rs. 6 lakh cash from home, Rs. 40 lakh in bank accounts and 12 credit cards. The team also found an under construction double storey building in the posh Defence Colony area of Delhi.
"We estimate his total wealth to be around Rs. 5.35 crore and we have asked him to present documents related to his assets on Thursday," said a senior official who was part of the raiding team. "We would like to know how he managed to accumulate these assets if there were no discrepancies and bungling of funds carried out by him," added the officer.
The initial raids began at Sainik Farms in south Delhi. Thereafter, sleuths also raided Kapoor's under construction house in defence colony and his properties in other places of India.
