New Delhi: Justice (retd) MS Liberhan may have submitted his report on the conspirators of the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid, but the CBI probe into the case has reached nowhere even after 17 years.
Experts blamed it on politics. After an initial probe, the CBI had registered criminal cases against LK Advani, Ashok Singhal, Giriraj Kishore, Murli Manohar Joshi, Vishnu Hari Dalmia, Vinay Katiyar, Uma Bharti and Sadhvi Ritambara for conspiring to bring down the mosque and making inflammatory speeches. The leaders were present when a mob demolished the 16th century monument on December 6, 1992.
"There is a lack of political will. The [Liberhan] commission, which took 17 years to submit its report, cannot act against the accused. Its findings would be transferred to the CBI for further investigation," Joginder Singh, who headed the CBI when the probe began, said.
Even after an extensive investigation, the agency has not found concrete evidence against any of the eight people who allegedly led the mob. Its case is loosely based on statements of a few police and paramilitary officers present at the mosque on demolition day.
Singh said, "Instead of strengthening the CBI, politicians have formed a commission that can't act. These are political stunts to please a section of society."
What is more shocking is that the special CBI court took 15 years to start recording statements of witnesses. Many witnesses died waiting for their turn. Eight cases are still pending in the court in Rae Bareilly.
The court started recording the statement of Hanuman Prasad, an assistant sub-inspector at the Ram Janmabhoomi police station on December 5, 2007, even though the CBI had registered 49 cases in October 1993. Prasad was summoned after the agency said Ganga Prasad Tiwari, in-charge of the police station, had died.
