Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad, who feared hostility from the CBI after he withdrew support to the UPA government on the issue of women’s quota in parliament, was relieved on Monday when the agency stood by him in the Supreme Court (SC).
SC was hearing a plea by Lalu and wife Rabri against a Patna high court order that the CBI appeal against the couple’s acquittal in 2006 by a special CBI judge in the 1997 disproportionate assets case.
The CBI lawyer, however, said the Centre alone could take a decision on such an appeal and HC had no power to do so.
