The parents’ association fighting against the proposed National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to medical colleges has requested the Gujarat government to support their cause. The association has also protested against exclusion of regional languages for conduct of NEET.

NEET is a common admission test for admission to all medical colleges across the country. The Medical Council of India (MCI) has decided to hold a single entrance test (NEET) for medical aspirants from early 2012 in order not to burden such students with multiple tests. While one NEET is proposed for admission to MBBS, another NEET is planned for MD/MS courses.

Association core committee member, Dr Jignesh Shah, said: "The chief minister and the leader of opposition of Andhra Pradesh have approached the Central government and union health minister for cancellation of NEET for next two years in the state. So the Gujarat government should also take a similar step."

Even Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have decided not to go for NEET for the next two years. And West Bengal government will soon organise a seminar for the students, parents, teachers as well as members of the state cabinet to take a decision on the issue for the betterment of students. "We expect a similar response from the Gujarat government and want their complete support throughout our fight. For the betterment of students, we also urge them to cancel NEET for the next two years in Gujarat," added Shah.
