Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad: On the occasion of World Environment Day, Gujarat Science City (GSC) organised a special game for visitors called 'Calculate your ecological footprint', in order to gauge their knowledge in the area of environmental awareness.

Talking about the game, senior scientist at GSC, Narottam Sahoo said, "The idea of ecological footprint measurement was conceived in 1990 by Mathis Wackernagel and William Rees at the University of British Columbia. We have converted this into a game to make people aware of their knowledge on environmental issues."

The game had 20 questions on various areas in one's life. It enquired about one's mode of transport, use of air conditioners, number of trees planted, printouts taken daily, type of mosquito repellent used etc. While there were no maximum or minimum scores, they varied from 70 to 375 points, with most being around 100.

"The game was an eye-opener. After playing it, I realised my lack of awareness about my responsibility towards the environment. I will plant trees and act responsibly from now on," said Akanksha Anand, a student and civil services aspirant. Bhumi Vyas, a volunteer who help to conduct the game, said it reflected the fact that visitors were generally aware about environmental issues, but their sense of responsibility was low, or they did not know the right approach towards a greener environment.
