Sacked Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi was today arrested by the CBI for allegedly awarding a contract for the Games to a Swiss company at an inflated rate of Rs141 crore in a "pre-meditated" manner.

Kalmadi's arrest was announced after his day-long questioning at the CBI headquarters, the fourth since December last, in connection with the alleged irregularities related to the award of contract for Timing-Scoring-Result (TSR) System for the Games to Swiss Timekeeping.

Kalmadi was arrested for "conspiracy to favour a private firm based in Switzerland by awarding contract of Timing Scoring and Result System at inflated cost of Rs141 crore," a senior CBI official said.

"It is alleged that officials of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee had conspired with the representatives of the private firm in Switzerland and contract for TSR was awarded by wrongfully restricting and eliminating competition from other suppliers in a pre-mediated and planned manner," the official said.

The official said the investigation has revealed that the committee for shortlisting prospective bidders was TSR was constituted by selecting "hand-picked" officials.

Kalmadi will be produced before a special CBI court tomorrow.

The CBI official pointed out that the OC's secretary general Lalit Bhanot and director general VK Verma have already been arrested in this case.

The CBI has so far registered eight cases of which three are related to restoration work of two sporting venues, two are related to Queen Baton's Relay, while one each is related to overlays, contract given to Swiss Time Keeping, and contract given to SIS live for the coverage of the Games.

Today was the fourth time that Kalmadi was questioned by the CBI with the first one being at his residence during December last year and the other on January 5 at the CBI headquarters and the third being on March 15.

Kalmadi had earlier told the media that he was not the only one involved in the decision-making process.
