In the wee hours of Sunday, a senior citizen couple was ruthlessly roughed up by burglars, who then made away with gold jewellery sets and other valuables from their locker.

Interestingly, only valuables belonging to the couple's daughter-in-law were stolen. According to police complaint by Sonal Patel, 36, a resident of 64 Shivam Society in Isanpur, her house was burgled and her parents-in-law were assaulted. Sonal's husband Prahshant was away in Mumbai. Apart from Sonal, her 12-year-old twin daughters were sleeping in the house when the burglary took place.

On Sunday night Sonal had been knitting on the ground floor of her bungalow until 1:00 am after which she retired to her bedroom on the first floor. Before going to sleep, she had reminded her parents-in-law, Ambalal, 70, and Vimla, 76, to shut the main door of the house.

On Monday morning, when she went downstairs, Sonal was shocked to see that her in-laws had been beaten up and were lying unconscious in their room. She cried for help, at which their neighbours came rushing. They then called the '108' ambulance and the police. The senior citizens were rushed to a private hospital in Maninagar, where their condition was serious.

Isanpur police found that the locker inside the senior couple's room had been opened. Sonal told the cops that two gold jewellery sets and other valuables worth a total Rs1.34 lakh had been stolen.

While the jewellery belonging to Sonal was stolen, Vimla's valuables were still in the locker, police said. The police also took the Patels' neighbour one Ahok Rami's statement. Rami said that he had heard noises coming from Ambalal's room between 3:30 and 4am, but dismissed it thinking that the 70-year-old was unwell.

Zone-6 DCP, Maninder Singh Pawar, said he suspects that someone known to the Patel family might be involved in the burglary as the door of the house was not broken. Neither were there too many signs of struggle in the room, he said.

According to him, a large number of labourers live in the vicinity and some electricians from AMC have been working to put a light pole there. Pawar said that these labourers would also be questioned as Ambalal would often interact with them and offer them tea.

Pawar also said that the seniors were gagged, hinting at a planned burglary.
