The pols in the city have always been held up as a shining example of community living with each member of the community looking after the well-being of the other. The community spirit was evident in the house collapse incident in Pakhali ni Pol in Raikhad on Saturday morning. A group of 10 youth from the neighbourhood rushed to the rescue of the three people who were caught in the collapse.
They did not wait for the fire and emergency service to reach the spot but instead risked their lives to save their neighbours.
Mukesh Padhiyar, who also stays in the same house that collapsed, and is a relative of the injured, said that the youth are residents of a nearby Pol. "It was not that we blindly rushed to rescue the injured. First we checked that no other part of the house was on the verge of collapse. When the floor caved in three people fell into a room that was locked from the outside," said Padhiyar.
He said, they have been living in the house for the last 40 years as tenants and pay Rs250 a month as rent."First we broke the locked door and moved some debris so that the three injured could be rescued. Gradually they were taken out and rushed to the VS hospital," said Padhiyar. He said the youth did give a thought to the condition of the building but the need to save the victims overrode any safety concerns they had for themselves.
The rescue operation was completed by the time the fire brigade reached the spot.
