After Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani, it was the turn of moderate Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to face the ire of Kashmiri Pandits.

An attempt to attack Mirwaiz was made at a seminar on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) in Chandigarh on Thursday.

A group of about 15 Kashmiri Pandits, who were part of the audience, pounced on the Hurriyat chairman as soon as he said in his address that “Kashmiris would like Hindustanis to share their agony and problem”.

The protesters snatched his microphone and tried to hurl a water bottle at him. In the pandemonium that lasted about 45 minutes, the demonstrators pelted stones, hurled flower pots and chairs around and smashed window panes of the hall where the seminar was in progress.

The situation came under control only after police arrived and took Mirwaiz and aides to safety. They also rounded up more than two dozen protesters.
After the seminar resumed more than an hour later, Mirwaiz regretted the violence but said it would not deter him from “continuing his peace efforts”.
