‘Brain stroke’ is the third most common cause of death in the world. But what is more alarming is that this problem is now experienced by young Indians (in their mid-30s) also, according to experts.

Unlike heart attack where people are aware about the function of heart and reasons of heart attack, brain stroke is a completely ignored area.

Sterling hospital, in association with the Heart Care Clinic (HCC), Ahmedabad, had organised a workshop on carotid angioplasty with stenting, which is the latest safe and patient-friendly, non-surgical technique for preventing brain stroke.

A group of specialists at the hospital recently performed seven successful ‘carotid angioplasty’ in a single day.

Speaking on the topic, Dr Urmil Shah of HCC said, “The commonest cause of brain stroke is carotid artery narrowing due to cholesterol deposition. Carotid arteries are main arteries supplying blood to the brain. In brain stroke, blood supply to brain is reduced, which results into loss of vision or sudden weakness of an arm or leg or quite often may lead to fatal brain stroke.”
